Anime, etc.

I've been feeling a real lack of interesting anime. Haven't seen anything new since I last posted. Any recommendations from anyone?

Random subject change:

I didn't think it was possible, but somehow Portal 2 was actually funnier than the original. Valve has shown time and again that when they put something out it's worth the wait. Which is why I'm convinced that Half Life 2: Episode 3 will be the Holy Grail of video games. Or something. And I still wouldn't be able to play it due to my inability to process what's going on from FPS mode.

Been watching Comic Con footage of The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra panel and it's pretty amazing. I'm probably most excited for this property in the upcoming future.

True Blood has been continuing its tradition of loosely interpreting the word "adaptation". It was more offensive in season 3 in regards to Alcide's character, but it still bugs me because book 4 is my favorite. Not like this is a tragedy or anything because it's still entertaining as all get-out to watch. I do like a lot of the ideas they're presenting.

The show still commits the deadly sin of thinking I give a damn about Jason's character and what he gets up to. Don't get me wrong, I love Ryan Kwanton (and I mean: damn is he entertaining) but I still hate the character. Jason=booooooooooooooring. Crystal=dumb. Jason+Crystal=Jill Sleepy-Time. And WTF is up with Bill becoming KING!? What!? Bill is terrible at leadership! That's a major character flaw. He's built on not leading. A major character trait of his is loner, not leader. I can see where one might get confused, both starting with 'l' and all, but sheesh.

True Blood also continues to think that Sookie is a secondary character, which as we know is in line with the book series. Y'know, it's not like she was the main protagonist of all those books...waitaminute. Well, it's not like they were from her point-of--hold on. Uh, well, it's not as if all the side stories have her as the narrator, right? Oh wait, all except one do. And that one story was a complete side story and didn't feature any first person narrative, the only one of Charlaine Harris's stories from the Southern Vampire series to do so. I'm just so tired of Jason's stupidity taking up precious screen time from Sookie. Or Bill's non-rule. Or Tara and Lafayette's boring "Oh noes, Eric gonna kill our asses" storyline. Dramatic irony only goes so far on that one. It wouldn't bug me except for four seasons it feels like Sookie actually gets the least amount of screen time and SHE'S THE MAIN FRIGGIN' CHARACTER. She's the one who introduces the audience to this wacky world, and we explore it on her terms. Why can't the show reflect that AT ALL?

*sigh*

Rant over for now.

Question for the day: If you could cosplay as any character ever, who would it be and why? I'll answer in my next post for myself but I'd like to hear any of your answers first. :)

Actually not dead...Really...

So, yeah. I kinda gave up on this blog 'cause I got busy at work and then I thought no one would miss me ranting on random stuff on the Internet, but then I was told I was wrong! (Also that's a huge run-on sentence I just typed.) Apparently someone actually missed my blog. Color me surprised.

So, lots of news I totally haven't updated on. Quick rundown on what's currently taking up my free time as of right now:
  • Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. After swearing I was done after that godawful movie Conqueror of Shambala (honestly, Nazi!Hughes?) Tony managed to pique my interest in what I thought was an unnecessary remake by telling me it was actually following the manga this time and then proceeded to spoil the manga for me because I thought I was done with it. Anyways, it's totally awesome and Arakawa is a friggin' genius, and anyone who thought they were done with the Elric brothers should give it another chance. Also the dub is pretty sweet if you hate subs. There's more I can fangirl on this, but I'll have to do it later as I really need to get to bed soon.
  • Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour or just the whole Scott Pilgrim series in general. The last (sixth) book finally came out and the wait was totally worth it. This comic series is a genius blend of real life ennui, geekdom and video game obsession rolled into a truly hilarious ball of fun and craziness. Honestly, if you like parody, comics, hilarity, video games, love, music, etc. this is for you. Check it out. Also, bonus movie directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) coming out in August that I'm really looking forward to.
  • Ouran High School Host Club is almost done in manga form! It's wrapping up pretty fast, so I think there's only one (at most two) chapters left. Those who love Haruhi and Tamaki will squeal like crazy.
  • Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins had hijacked my life. I'm replaying the former for the bizillionth time as I finally broke down and paid for DLC. I had to download Kasumi when I saw part of her loyalty mission on YouTube. Worth it. I love her. Also, for the record Bioware officially owns my soul. When I saw The Old Republic trailer I was hyperventilating until I remembered it's an MMORPG and I hate playing with others because they ruin my fantasy/happy place/escapism. MAKE KOTORIII DAMMIT!!
  • Inception was brilliant. If you haven't seen it, close down your browser window and head to your nearest theater to see it right now. It's so refreshing to see a competent, well-made movie with real actors and practical effects and solid writing. Also great directing.
  • Still haven't played new PoP. Also wishing they hadn't abandoned the Elika/Nolan North one. I loved that one, really wanted to see where they were taking that. Though the combat sucked, they could've fixed it easy. Why did Ubisoft listen to the twelve irritating fanboys of the last franchise and abondon the new one!? IT WAS GOING PLACES! There were characters I friggin' cared about! GAAAAAAAAAAAH . (Also dragged poor Tony to see that stupid movie. Words can't describe how much fail that movie had. But also shirtless Jake Gyllenhaal, so I can forgive some of it.)
  • Kick Ass was great. Loved every moment, even if it was different than the comics. Sometimes you need to stray from the source material because of the medium it's currently in.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll sit down for real in the very near future to torture all two of you who read this thing with my incessant fangirl squeals about something previously mentioned or something I haven't had the chance to gush on yet. So...fear me?

Oh! True Blood! Totally awesome. Really the only thing I'm watching consistently on TV right now. They are totally making shit up, but I don't care because it is amazing. Mostly. Sick of Sam's deadbeat family and Jason's obsession with Crystal. To be fair, I hate Jason and Crystal in the books too.

The Wisdom of Saying "Bite Me" to a Vampire

I've got to make this quick as I have to wake up reeeaaallllyy early tomorrow.

So, HBO is often known for their awesome/or controversial shows. Last great show on HBO was Rome. Now it's True Blood, based off a series of books.

True Blood follows Anna Paquin as a telepathic waitress (Sookie Stackhouse) in the Deep South (made up town named Bonne Temps in Louisiana) two years after vampires "come out of the coffin" because of a synthetic drink made by the Japanese called 'TruBlood' that satisfies their needs. Vamps are trying to integrate into society in the open now, trying to get basic civil liberties. Sookie meets a really hot vampire named Bill Compton (Sookie: "'Bill the Vampire'? Are you serious?") and both parties are intrigued right away. Sookie is a very open-minded, morally up-right quirky girl that's hard not to love. She's a virgin, as reading the minds of others has led to some really funny and horrific dates. She can't read Bill's mind, which is refreshing to her.

There's a lot of allegory to racial injustice and homosexuality and all that, which is really cool. The setting works suprisingly well, as the Deep South really is kind of a fantasy land in the U.S.A. The South is definitely a world of its own, and the Gothic South displayed here is incredibly fascinating. Plus there's deviant sex, vampire making out, and really great writing and chemistry. Also, the actors are fabulous, as most of them are British (but you wouldn't know it) or Anna Paquin (who won an Oscar at age 11). There's a lot of humor and drama, and all the great stuff in between. I'll gush more when I have the chance. So far two episodes have aired. It's on Sunday nights before Entourage.

Have I mentioned that I adore Anna Paquin? I do. She's my favorite X-men (Rogue) and one of the few young actresses who's actually talented and fun to watch. She's in a lot of indie films as well as some mainstream and is really cute and quirky. I adore her.

Still playing Prince of Persia. My desktop currently consists of some adorable Prince/Farah fanart.
