The Curse of Live Action

It strikes!  I am helpless to its evil, black power!  Live action adaptations have stricken me and I have fallen under their sway!  My life before is barely memorable now that I have been swept into the dreamland that is J-Drama...

Believe me, I feel even sillier for admitting this.  I can't help it though.  The Rurouni Kenshin film started it.  I did promise a review, and then didn't deliver (I do that A LOT, don't I?).  So I will try to appease the dark spirits of my guilt and longing by doing a mini-review right now:

Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorite animes/mangas of all time.  My first introduction to anime was actually The Vision of Escaflowne, and it was the dub on Fox on Saturday mornings when I was in my early teens (I want to say I was 14, maybe 15 tops).  It wouldn't be until years later,  my freshman year of college to be exact, that I would watch Kenshin's tale.  After Escaflowne, I was introduced to Cowboy Bebop and then hooked.  I asked Tony for my next recommendation and he suggested Rurouni Kenshin as it was dear to him (and starting to air again on Cartoon Network).  I fell head over heels.  Kenshin was my real introduction to Japan as a whole.  It taught me the history of Japan through the Bakumatsu (I wanted to understand what the factions represented and why they were fighting) as well as the culture, both current and past.  It taught me how the introduction of Western technology and ideals really changed the shape of Japan, how they integrated it, what it meant to them, and what it would mean for the future (current day).  Not to mention Kenshin himself, and how much I freaking love him.  Also Kaoru.  They're one of my OTPs and I have not nearly enough fanart for them because MORE PEOPLE NEED TO MAKE IT AS I AM NO WHERE TALENTED ENOUGH TO DO SO MYSELF.

That being said (babbled), the movie...so the movie has some problems.  This was inevitable, as the whole of Rurouni Kenshin can't be easily condensed and make sense, much less the first arc.  Instead, they tried to make the first two major arcs run simultaneously (something I kind of admired, actually, as it makes sense for a shorter adaptation) and ended up combining two major villians for this purpose: Jin-Eh is masquerading as Battousai just 'cause he can (previously GoHei's schtick), and he works for Kanryu Takeda who is our somewhat primary villian, along with another assortment of gangsters and ex-hitokiris, one who is supposed to be a combination of (I think) Aoshi and Makoto Shishio....yeah.  Sure.  Also none of the text on screen was translated.  Ever.  You want to know what's being said?  Fuck you.  That's what.

Anyway, to accomplish the two simultaneous arcs they have Kanryu trying to get rid of Kaoru's dojo...because.  Jin-Eh takes on Battosai claiming to use Kamiya Kasshin Ryu...because...they actually never freaking explain it.  Kaoru makes a big deal of it and it is a plot point and then they just up and forget about it.  Forever.  It really stuck in my craw.  Kanryu is still making opium and forcing Megumi to do it for him to sell to the city with the aim of the rest of Japan, or THE ENTIRE WORLD!  MWAHAHAHA!  Kanryu's point in this is to demonstrate how low Japan is brought by the West when traditional Japanese idealogy is completely disregarded.  He does a pretty good job of it too.  The character/actor was clearly a favorite for the director as a lot of the story revolves around him and his facial expressions.  Which is fine.  He does a good job, but he isn't what I think of for "major shounen villian".  In the least.  They have Jin-Eh for final show-down villian, and he slaughters an entire prefecture of police (and then some for good measure) and yet he isn't our major villian.  Somehow.  Except for storming the prefecture and being Kenshin's final enemy in the film, he's just not there.  Which really sucked, and lacked necessary impact for Kenshin's emotional/personality change during the fight.  That leads me to the next point:

Kaoru hardly exists in the film.  I mean, she does, she's there for at least half the major events; Emi and Takeru have major chemistry and almost no romantic one-on-one scenes.  In RK, Kaoru is the heart of the series.  She is everyone's center.  She is the most compassionate character with a real fire burning behind her convictions.  She doesn't care about people's pasts (really important for Kenshin's case) and says everyone has something they don't want to talk about AND SHE MEANS IT.  Which is somewhat ironic as she's the only one in the Kenshin-gumi that has nothing to regret or forgive in her past.  Kaoru represents the purity of the soul, fighting commitment, and how to transmute traditional Japanese ideals into the new era (modern day).  She is brave, confident (sometimes overly), kind, and quick-tempered.  Kenshin is the yang to her yin (I know that's backwards, but Kenshin is more yang than yin) as calm, cool, humble and downright sad, though he masks it well.  Kaoru is weak only when compared to Kenshin and his ilk (others we meet in the series, they're all the best of the best of the best) but would be in the top five if nationally rated.  In the movie she can barely fight, and most of the time doesn't even try.  This is the opposite of what she's supposed to be.  She's supposed to be skilled and hold her own most times.  Here she tries for half a second and is immediately taken down by a cut to her arm from Jin-Eh.  It was incredibly distressing for a fan such as myself.

All that being said...the movie was still highly enjoyable.  The actors were brilliant, the cinematography was amazing, and the fight scenes...the fight scenes you guys.  It was brilliant.  Takeru Sato was absolutely, utterly breathtaking.  He was Kenshin.  He had Kenshin's speed and skill and his handsomeness, and it was like watching poetry.  Poetry that could skillfully kick your ass.  His voice sent shivers down my back at parts and my jaw was permanently on the floor during his stunts.  If for no other reason, you have to watch this movie for the choreography alone.  Also for this one moment where Kenshin really becomes the Kenshin we know and love (Kaoru gives him new/old clothes, he steps out into the dojo yard and the wind picks up....the peace in his face...).  I almost cried.

Yeah, so my "mini-review" was more...me just effing babbling endlessly.  Sorry.

So more live action adaptations I've been enjoying:
Yes!  Ouran High School Host Club!  It's awesome!  Seriously.  You would not believe.  The guy who plays Tamaki...he has the ability to be cartoonish and make it natural.  That's impossible for American/Western actors.  He's really funny (and fluid).  Not hot, but I can live with that because he is super talented.

Also:
Okay, this is the ending and it makes it look all Edo-period, but I still love it.  This is Otomen (pun on otome which is Japanese for "maiden" and 'men').  It's about a boy who loves girly things (but doesn't want to be a girl) who has to hide his true feelings and be the manliest boy there ever was due to a promise he made his mother.  He falls in love with a girl who was raised to be a boy, so she is terrible at girly-things.  It's based off a manga of the same name (no anime adaptation, though) and it is so incredibly awesome I don't have words.  It reminds me a lot of Ouran and a bit of Ranma as well.  It's well written with a great cast of characters and fun running gags.  Please check it out at:
Drama Crazy
They have translated anime, J-dramas, and K-dramas!  It's awesome!

Oh!  Also loved the adaptation for Yamato Nadeshiko no Shichi Henge (Wallflower):

In this adaptation it's really more about Kyohei growing as a person, but I'm okay with that.  It gave it more heart than the original.  Sunako is more of a running gag than a character, but to be fair she's somewhat more effective that way.  It's not like she can be SD in this version, so what else can they do?

Ouran Chapter 81!

Oh my God! For those who are fans of the Ouran High School Host Club a translation for chapter 81 was just posted on One Manga...unfortunately the site will be going down shortly. After years of storing scanalations they decided to to adhere to the publishers' wishes and will be taking down the site. Boo! Also chapter 81 isn't the last chapter, either.

Anyway, for those who don't want to be spoiled quit reading....here.

Spoilers

OH MY GOD! Haruhi and Tamaki admitted their love for each other! And it was hilarious! Perfect, perfect, perfect. Haruhi admits it when a plane flies overhead so Tamaki can't hear her, but he guesses correctly and tries to get her to confess again and then tries to confess himself by saying "Me too!" making it sound like he loves himself like in Haruhi's dream. That was a major run-on I just typed. Then he tries to plan their first date! It's so cute I couldn't help laughing. And the kissing. There's kissing! Soooooooooooooooo cute, I squealed. Can't wait for the translated manga. Anyone know if this is going to be onmibussed?

Actually not dead...Really...

So, yeah. I kinda gave up on this blog 'cause I got busy at work and then I thought no one would miss me ranting on random stuff on the Internet, but then I was told I was wrong! (Also that's a huge run-on sentence I just typed.) Apparently someone actually missed my blog. Color me surprised.

So, lots of news I totally haven't updated on. Quick rundown on what's currently taking up my free time as of right now:
  • Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. After swearing I was done after that godawful movie Conqueror of Shambala (honestly, Nazi!Hughes?) Tony managed to pique my interest in what I thought was an unnecessary remake by telling me it was actually following the manga this time and then proceeded to spoil the manga for me because I thought I was done with it. Anyways, it's totally awesome and Arakawa is a friggin' genius, and anyone who thought they were done with the Elric brothers should give it another chance. Also the dub is pretty sweet if you hate subs. There's more I can fangirl on this, but I'll have to do it later as I really need to get to bed soon.
  • Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour or just the whole Scott Pilgrim series in general. The last (sixth) book finally came out and the wait was totally worth it. This comic series is a genius blend of real life ennui, geekdom and video game obsession rolled into a truly hilarious ball of fun and craziness. Honestly, if you like parody, comics, hilarity, video games, love, music, etc. this is for you. Check it out. Also, bonus movie directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) coming out in August that I'm really looking forward to.
  • Ouran High School Host Club is almost done in manga form! It's wrapping up pretty fast, so I think there's only one (at most two) chapters left. Those who love Haruhi and Tamaki will squeal like crazy.
  • Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins had hijacked my life. I'm replaying the former for the bizillionth time as I finally broke down and paid for DLC. I had to download Kasumi when I saw part of her loyalty mission on YouTube. Worth it. I love her. Also, for the record Bioware officially owns my soul. When I saw The Old Republic trailer I was hyperventilating until I remembered it's an MMORPG and I hate playing with others because they ruin my fantasy/happy place/escapism. MAKE KOTORIII DAMMIT!!
  • Inception was brilliant. If you haven't seen it, close down your browser window and head to your nearest theater to see it right now. It's so refreshing to see a competent, well-made movie with real actors and practical effects and solid writing. Also great directing.
  • Still haven't played new PoP. Also wishing they hadn't abandoned the Elika/Nolan North one. I loved that one, really wanted to see where they were taking that. Though the combat sucked, they could've fixed it easy. Why did Ubisoft listen to the twelve irritating fanboys of the last franchise and abondon the new one!? IT WAS GOING PLACES! There were characters I friggin' cared about! GAAAAAAAAAAAH . (Also dragged poor Tony to see that stupid movie. Words can't describe how much fail that movie had. But also shirtless Jake Gyllenhaal, so I can forgive some of it.)
  • Kick Ass was great. Loved every moment, even if it was different than the comics. Sometimes you need to stray from the source material because of the medium it's currently in.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll sit down for real in the very near future to torture all two of you who read this thing with my incessant fangirl squeals about something previously mentioned or something I haven't had the chance to gush on yet. So...fear me?

Oh! True Blood! Totally awesome. Really the only thing I'm watching consistently on TV right now. They are totally making shit up, but I don't care because it is amazing. Mostly. Sick of Sam's deadbeat family and Jason's obsession with Crystal. To be fair, I hate Jason and Crystal in the books too.

Ouran 2nd Half

So, the second half of Ouran High School Host Club is out but good luck finding it in stores. I continually checked Best Buy for a week and a half after the release date and it still never showed up. Not even on their website. The first half is still there.

What did I do? I pouted and whined. Tony pointed out that the Internet is a viable source of legally purchasing anime, and I whined some more about how my complex won't allow me to accept packages anymore. Solution? Mail anime to his place. Yay! I got the second half on Amazon.com. Hallelujah! For cheap(er) too!

Still fun menus and extras. And of course the anime itself. Heeeeeeee. Must loan it out to people who want to see (I'm a one-woman lending-library).

In video game news, absolutely nothing to look forward to is on the horizon. That was quick!

No movies, no video games, and no (really) new anime to look forward to right now. Bleak. Oh, almost forgot to mention that Bones' Darker Than Black is starting to come out on DVD, so keep a lookout for it. Box set won't appear for a while, though.

Animation

I'm totally stunned: American animation isn't dead. I just spent the last week watching Avatar: The Last Airbender (seasons 1-3) and absolutely loved it. I can't stop quoting it or searching for art on deviant art about it. The fact that this show aired on Nickelodeon still astounds me. Best characters are of course Sokka and Toph, and I'm a Zutarian (because heaven forbid I should choose the cannonical couple...) all the way. This show was just way too awesome. It combined all the best parts of anime and American cartoons while having some of the best characters I've ever seen on a screen. A friend lent me season one and I rushed out to buy the rest (in my defense I was going to buy Ouran High School Host Club part 2 but it was no where in sight). Kudos to American animation!

Also started watching an anime called Toradora! on Tony's reccommendation. It carries on the tsundere character-type created by The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's titular character in the form of Taiga, a tiny delinquent. It's a romantic comedy that's hilarious, told from Ryuuji's POV (a boy with a gentle nature but with "evil eyes") about the two percieved delinquents trying to help each other hook up with their respective best friends. Beautiful and punchy animation combined with hilarious voice acting creates a cracktacular series. Not as great as Suzumiya, but still promising.

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays here! 2008 is coming to a rapid close and there's still so much of it left to enjoy. It gave us a pretty decent year in gaming, less so in anime. In terms of gifts, it gave us a lot to ponder.

Every one of my friends but myself has an Xbox360 now. I'll probably get it sooner rather than later now. With my latest friend getting an Xbox (Seth) we also got to experience Rockband 2 and create characters! It's incredibly addictive, though as the singer of the group I didn't know as many of the songs on this playlist as I did on the first one. There is an option to port over Rockband 1's playlist over to 2, so hopefully we'll get around to that. I'm pretty much going to try and hang out at Seth's as much as possible now because this game is just that fun. Also now that we're not playing on the Wii the controls work much better and character creation is too fun. Seth and I were fighting over who got to spend money on whose character while Tony and Larry rolled their eyes at us.

Prince of Persia came to a close a while ago (it's almost criminally short) with a controversial but (in my mind) brilliant ending. Also, it sets up for a sequel. I feel less good about that given Ubisoft's track record.

Tony was a doll and got me Blood + season 1 box set (with a great T-shirt in the box, though the full series would have been acceptable) so I've been watching the DVDs. I keep forgetting that Adult Swim used to edit a lot of the blood out so it's more of a gore fest than I remember, but that only adds rather than detracting from the experience. "Saya!" Never gets old.

Ouran High School Host Club 2 will be out in two or three weeks. Cannot wait. Love this series.

Death Note boxset 1 is out for a reasonable price (first half of the series for $50.00--that's around 30 episodes). One of the few Madhouse series to not have gallons of blood to spurt at high pressure in every episode (the other series is Monster if you were curious) and has lots of crazy "intellectual" twists. It's hella fun to see Light and L go at outsmarting each other and all the moral issues involved with Light's actions. Definitely worth the cash.

Can't really think of anything else noteworthy to squawk about right now. Maybe later. Happy Holidays once again!

First Season of Ouran Review

I purchased the first season of Ouran High School Host Club (henceforth known by OHSHC or simply Ouran) on Sunday. I was pleased as punch over the price ($42.00) for thirteen episodes on two discs. The box art is adorable, as are the individual thin pack dvd cases. I had to spend a good fifteen minutes staring at all the art because it was just too cute.

As I've noted before, the animation and sound quality are top knotch. The colors are bright, and fit very well with the tone of the series. The character designs are less awkward in the anime than the manga, and Bones works very well in employing their action shots or slow pans with flowers. The satire is subtle in both the art direction as well as the actual story/characters/plot. Beautifully done.

Here's the real shocker: the dub is actually decent. I know, take a second to get those socks that just blew off. I'll wait. Seriously though, it's not bad. I still love the japanese better, but if I were forced to listen to the dub it would still be enjoyable. Haruhi actually sounds indistinct enough to possibly be a male, but still comes across as female when she needs to be. Caitlin Glass really nails her well. Honey is played by a girl (just like in the sub) and it still fits. Mori's dubbed voice is actually the sexiest--too bad he has almost no lines. Tamaki is the only one I have issue with--Vic Mignogna just can't pull of the sexiness needed for the pick up lines Tamaki spews so sincerely. He can do the upset/crazy/silly Tamaki, but not the sexy one.

For the extras...I haven't listened to episode commentary (haven't had time as of yet) but I did listen to the outtakes by the dub actors and they are hilarious. Fifteen minutes of non-stop fun. Especially for someone like me who's interested in breaking into that field. No good running gags like the Berserk ones, I'm afraid (and no one breaks out into song, either), but still fun/cute all the same.

These DVDs are a steal, and the series is one that everyone will enjoy (seriously, if Tony can enjoy it than only the truly depraved will hate it). Jill gives her gold inked rubber-stamp of approval on this one. ^_^

It's Almost Like An Epidemic...

Recently I've encountered three female adults who are into anime because of their children. I was astounded. My personal trainer (it feels weird saying that, or typing in this case) has a daughter who's basically a younger (14 years-old), cuter version of me when it comes to manga/anime/Japanese culture. Which is awesome. I can give tips on good series that the both of them would enjoy that's also age-appropriate, and so far they like it. ^_^

Another was a patient who spotted my desktop background (currently Saya and Haji from Blood +) and recognized them. Her children are five and seven and are into Pokémon and Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service. She became interested in the stories they were telling ("But I'm sick to death of Pokémon") and began to rent stuff, one accidentally being Blood +. I typed out a list of things I thought she'd like (with some recommendations for her kids as well) while she met with the doctor, and though the list wasn't long (I had trouble thinking of age-appropriate and shoujo titles in the twenty minutes I had) she was thrilled with it. I'll have to go through and find more titles that'd work.

The third was a woman in Subway who was reading a Wallflower manga. I saw it, shyly stepped over and recommended Ouran High School Host Club to her if she liked that one, and she was thrilled for the rec. "I'd heard about it! It's just my friend owned these and lent them to me. Thank you though--if it's funny like these are I'll have to check it out." I assured her that it was humorous (though in a different way) and she wrote it down with a happy look on her face.

It's like anime has begun to spread over the masses. Quite frankly it's about time.

Soooo...I've Apparently Been Busy...

Sorry about the monthly absence. That was rude of me. I also missed informing people of some important dates beforehand, so in case you didn't know, let's get some of this out of the way.

  • Fallout 3 has already descended on the masses. Having played a bit of it myself it is by all means a fantastic game and I'll get more in-depth on it later. I have some personal issues with the game, but I'm spoiled (apparently) when it comes to RPGs.
  • Fable 2 has also hit shelves. Since Peter Molyneux actually kept his mouth (more or less) shut on what happens in this one it has been delighting fans instead of disappointing them. I want to play (very badly) because I'm missing my fantasy RPGs, no thanks to Bioware delaying Jade Empire 2 indefinitely, but that's a different matter entirely...
  • Ouran High School Host Club (season 1= episodes 1-13) has finally come out Stateside and so far it's bloody fantastic. I haven't bothered to listen to the dub yet because I adore the Japanese voices to pieces, so I don't know how it sounds. It's a Funimation dub...so chances are it's okay but slightly irritating. Anyway, not having to rely on my dubious Internet connection to watch one of my favorite series is a true joy, and I get to see it on a whole TV screen! The subtitles are incredibly well-translated, even funnier than what the fansubbers translated. I know, I was floored too. The colors pop, the sound editing is amazing, and the extras are fun. The animation is stellar (it is Bones, after all) and the humor is over-the-top, but in a good way. I highly recommend this series, and I personally hate shoujo. Combine that with 13 episodes crammed on two DVDs for the low price of $42.00 and you have a winner. Seriously.
  • Prince of Persia by Ubisoft has been pushed back by another week or two. Gametrailers has been updating regularly with gameplay videos and trailers that are fun to goggle at. I'm excited for it. I'm hoping that it gets back to the Sands of Time aesthetic. (And yes, I played a little bit of Two Thrones but had to quit when I heard Farah with a replaced voice. WTF!?)
  • Lego Batman came out and was suprisingly fun. Pure fun. Except I hated the vehicle sections. Why do games do that? No matter what genré it is games always have a vehicle section. And they're always annoying as hell and pull you right out of the game. Especially that POS in Mass Effect. That thing would be a law suit in real life with all the whiplash it could hurl out. Plus all the puke smell from passengers emptying the contents of their stomachs...

Okay, so I promised more in-depth on Fallout 3. It's a FPS RPG (though you could switch to 3rd person view, and you don't have to fight with guns) made by Bethesda (Oblivion: the Elder Scrolls). You create a hero (they can be female too!) that you will pilot for the rest of this adventure and there are literally too many frickin' choices for a face you'll almost never see. The game is incredibly deep with about a million game-play choices for literally everything you do. And not the fake choices most games give you where you have to choose between doing the good or evil thing. There is a real neutral path in this game. The choices you make are governed by a karma system in the game. Nice choices (helping others, not killing people, etc.) lead to good karma while nasty choices (blowing up a town, killing NPCs, eating corpses (yes, you can become a cannibal)) lead to bad karma. No karma is neutral, or karmic choices that balance out leads to being neutral.

The game doesn't discriminate against any of your choices. You can kill anyone you meet (except for children, that's the only line the game draws). You can destroy entire towns (not the actual town, but those in it). You can become a ninja fighter (there is a perk for it!), and fight only using stealth and your bare hands. You can wield swords, or guns, or even make a mini-nuke launcher. You can mutate yourself with enough radiation to grow back limbs...and other stuff. You can sell you companions or kill them, develop relationships with NPCs, or decapitate them using the VATS system. The dialogue options are hilarious no matter what side you play on, and entertainment is unceasing. There's literally too much to do, or you could skip it all in favor of just doing the main quest.

The world is varied and beautifully rendered, and your environments are often chilling as you survey how the nuclear blast caught people unawares. It's strange to see downtown D.C. as a virtual wasteland with roaming super-mutants and feral ghouls. The monuments are eerie reminders of a more stable time and seem to have lost all meaning in this hellish day and age.

Now for the flip side: the uncanny valley rears its ugly head here. As great as the voice acting is (and it's truly award-winning) looking at any character (including your own) will cause you to shudder as their dead eyes stare unceasingly into the camera. NPCs and enemies (as well as yourself in third person) move in a really stupid way, and the ragdoll physics will glitch about half the time. I could get over it except that I learned most character interaction is mainly for taking quests and no actual character development whatsoever. No real romance here, folks. No friends, either, unless you count Dogmeat (the dog) and he's not much for conversation. Now, those who read this know I'm all about character development and connecting with the characters in every story I play. And while I'm incredibly impressed with Fallout 3's story, aesthetic, and game play, this is a huge downer for me. If I can't find a character to connect with I tend to care a lot less what's going on around me. What sucks is that a lot of thought and about a million details went into the making of this game, and it shows. So why would adding character connection be so hard!? Bethesda hit all the right notes literally everywhere else except here. I can overlook it, but not as easily as others. I guess that's my real downfall.

I did pick up one fun perk called Black Widow for being a female that gives me 10% more damage against male enemies as well as extra dialogue options. It has proved entertaining so far.

Kinda Related to Comics...X-Men, Anyway....

Heroes finally came back on television! And they're doing it right, unlike last season! It's really exciting, as all the answers we're getting are actually raising more questions. And it's shot like a visual comic book again, which I always appreciated. It's the closest thing on American television that resembles anime without being anime. I'm so in love again with the series. *sigh*

Ouran High School Host Club is coming out in about a month and a half. Soooooo excited! Tamaki-silly-goodness...aaaaaahhh....

Ouran High School Host Club Update (...Finally)

The dub cast has been announced for Ouran High School Host Club and apparently hard at work. The only actors that are really noteworthy are Caitlin Glass as Fujioka Haruhi (she dubbed for Winry in Fullmetal Alchemist), Vic Mignogna as Suoh Tamaki (he dubbed Edward Elric in FMA among other notable roles) and Greg Ayers as one of the Hitachiin twins (Kaoru) (Greg dubbed Sousuke in Fullmetal Panic! and other noteworthy roles).

A RELEASE DATE HAS FINALLY BEEN ANNOUNCED! October 26th will see the release of a season one boxset (episodes 1-13) including a dub (duh), episode commentary, and outtakes. I'm so excited I might cry! It's finally coming stateside! I don't care about the dub, really, though I am looking forward to outtakes (nothing compares to the Berserk ones though...yet). OHSHC should take the Victorian Romance Emma approach and just nix the dub and extras. VRE season one is out on boxset now.

^_^ Happy day! Funimation finally made their move!
